'The Ice Man of Ladakh'.
Ladakh's dry and barren environment makes life difficult. The average rainfall is pathetically low also. People rely on ice glaciers for water- farming and everything else. Therefore our man Chewang Norphel began creating fake glaciers based on an idea that came to him when he witnessed water flowing from a tap that was kept open to prevent the water from freezing and bursting in the winter. As it came into contact with the ground and formed a pool, the water gradually froze into the shape of an ice sheet. He utilized this as a foundation for a similar procedure involving canals, which aided in the provision of water to settlements.
In 2015, Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, was awarded to him. He transformed life in Ladakh in this way and hence he got his name- 'Ice Man'.
